1 ? Photos by Richard Lykes Sunday’s annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday was held in The Theatre in Washington. The celebration is organized by Nan Butler Roberts and is sponsored each year by the Julia E. Boddie Scholarship Committee which gives the “Dream Keepers" award-to a local citizen who has by deed and example helped keep the MLK dream alive. This year's Dream Keeper award was given to Mrs. Dorothy C. Butler of Sperryville (top left), a noted teacher who after retirement became the first African-American to serve on the Rappahannock County School Board. At left, always a festive affair, the ladies come out in style like Shirley Grant (left), wife of Pastor Wendell Grant of Washington's First Baptist Church, and friend Carrie Vevene (nght). Above, The Martin Luther King Day event always begins with a spirited and patriotic rendition of the National Anthem, here sung by the Martin Luther King Community Choir’s soprano Catherine Robinson (left) and alto-soprano Mane Davis-Roman (right).
