Hearthstone
Collections for underprivileged
Hearthstone is collecting toothbrushes, sample-sized toothpaste and bars of soap to donate to underprivileged children in Senegal, West Africa. Hearthstone parent Christine Lauria and her son Alessandro will travel there in February. If you have items to donate, please bring them to the school office by Monday, Feb. 11.
The high school will be visiting an orphanage in Cozumel, Mexico, in February. Hearthstone is collecting the following items to donate to the orphanage:
Children's clothing suitable for hot climate (new or in excellent condition), high-quality construction tools (claw hammers, cordless drills, extension cords, tape measures), sports equipment and school supplies (colored pencils, red pens, glue sticks and pencil sharpeners, but no paper or spiral notebooks).
Please bring your donation items to the school office by Monday, Jan. 28.
Skiing and
snowboarding lessons
Hearthstone began its annual skiing and snowboarding lessons at Massanutten Resort on Jan. 9. The lessons will continue once per week for six weeks.
Wakefield Country
Day School
Wakefield Country Day School hosted a geography bee Jan. 4. In it, the top two students selected from grades four through eight fielded questions about topography, culture, population and economic characteristics.
Wakefield has participated at the school level in the national competition for the past four years.
The ten contestants from the school were: fourth grade - Tor Mowatt-Larssen and Christopher Parios; fifth grade - Willow Lynn and Amy Chadduck; sixth grade - Alex Foster and Sam Nolan; seventh grade - Alexander Rodriguez (Alternate Ashton Yamall) and Henry Johnson; eighth grade - John Morgan Christoph and Kaitlin Burgess.
Eighth grader John Morgan Christoph beat out his rivals for the third year in a row to place first. He will take a multiple-choice written test to determine if he will compete among the top 100 scorers in Virginia’s state competition, as he did last year.
