“I was really pleased to see the level of team work that we had.* Rappahannock County head coach Dave Naser said. Naser pointed out that Rappahannock County got scoring from Collins, Clatterbuck, seniors Alana Cloud. Colleen Daly and Nancy Herbert, sophomore Tyler Crews and eighth grader Greg Czekty.
Sophomores Joe Vickers and Steve Nelson also played. In reaching the championship round against George Mason, the Panthers clinched a regional tournament berth. So Naser decided to experiment. He pulled Daly, Clatterbuck and Cloud from the starting lineup. He put in Czekiy, Nelson and Vickers to start, along with Collins.
“You go in thinking, ‘Well, we’re going to lose again,’ “ Collins said. “We subbed out most of the starters. We were going to get some people more experience."
The Panthers jumped out to a 30 to minus 5 lend. “I thought that this was kind of surprising,” Collins said. “We’ve never been beating George Mason like that.”
The Mustangs, who start four seniors, rallied to pull to a 65-65 tie after the opening round.
Naser immediately changed his thinking. Realizing that Rappahannock County had a chance to stay with the Mustangs, he brought in Herbert, Cloud and Daly for the directed round of questions.
The Panthers completed the directed round with a 165-155 lead.
“At that point, I heard George Mason say, ‘Lets do the strategy,’ “ Collins said. “I turned to Alana and said ‘Let’s do our strategy.' She said, What’s our strategy?* I said, "To beat their strategy.’ “
The Mustangs made the final 15 questions interesting. They scored points on the 13th and Nth questions to pull within 215-210.
The 15th and final question decided the outcome.
