EXPECTATIONS
One of the first things that visitors to curly Christian burial grounds in this country may notice is the clear positioning of graves in an east/west orientation. This was done because, in the eyes of early settlers, having the heads of their coffins pointing toward the west and having their feet point east placed them in a position to rise up and face the "new day" (rising sun.) That way. the dead would not have to turn around in their graves to face Gabriel when he blows his trumpet in the eastern sunrise on Resurrection Day. On the other side of that same coin, nonbelievers were often buried facing the west, which deprived them of the consideration afforded true believers.
