This year will be Rappahannock County’s 10th annual Relay for Life and we’re hoping to mnke it the best ever. We intend both to have more fun and raise more money than ever liefore. And, this can only be done by enlisting lots of people to lead teams; to help plan the event; and to raise funds. There is much more to the Relay than the big event itself. There is planning, there are meetings, and fund-raising events .which must come before the actual event. Please consider joining a Team or becoming a Team (‘aptain or joining our Planning Committee. But, most importantly, put this on your calendar: The 10th Annual Relay for Life will be held on May 17-18 at the Kuppahunnock County Klementary School.
Relay for Life is the only county fund raiser for the Rappahunnock County Unit of the American Cancer Society. The Relay is organized around teams. Before the Relay, team members raise donations for the American Cancer Society, both individually and through team efforts such as bake sales, pancake breakfasts, und the like. Some teams compete eagerly to see who can raise the most funds. Many teams set up tents at the school the night of the Relay. 'Phere is good-nutured camaraderie both around the camp site” and on the track. And, like many Rappahannock events, there will be food— ■macks and drinks throughout the event and a picnic dinner, late-evening pizza, and nn early continental breakfast.
The Relay is also one of the largest community events in Rappahannock County. It is both a celebration of life and a community party. Survivors walk the first lap, symbolizing the progress we have made. Kvening luminary ceremonies memorialize those special people who have lost their battles with the disease and celebrate those who have survived. In addition, cancer education takes place. There is also a I)-*J and activities for the kids of all ages.
The kick-off meeting for team captains will be on Monday, .January 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the Washington Baptist ( Inin h, located at the comer of Mount Salem Avenue and (Jay Street in Washington. The planning committee will meet at 6 P m. on the same evening. Even if you can’t join the planning committee, please plan on attending the meeting with your ideas on how we can make this Relay the lest ever. At the kickoff meeting, we will discuss how Relay assists the* American ( ancer Society’s work in lesearch and programs that will reduce the cancer incidence in the future and provide help now to those with cancer.
