A.J. Collins does not remember what answer Brittany Clatterbuck gave Saturday.
He was too busy hugging and trading high fives with his Rappahannock County High School Scholastic Bowl teammates.
“Its amazing that the quizmaster heard what Brittany said ” said Collins, a junior who serves as the Panthers’ team captain. “I didn’t, and she was sitting right next to me."
Clatterbuck’s correct response about geography capped a 225-205 victory over George Mason in the first of two championship rounds of the Group A Bull Run District tournament at Clarke County in Berryville.
George Mason recovered to stop the Panthers, 230-160, to capture its ninth district championship.
But just scoring a win over the Mustangs is huge for the Panthers.
Collinst a three-year starter, had a personal losing streak of 15 matches dating back to his freshman year. The victory also snapped George Mason’s 58-match district streak that started in November, 2004.
“This is a big deal. We had come in second so many times before," Clatterbuck said. “This is more exciting than any soccer game I’ve been in."
Thank goodness there are no penalties for cheering in high school Scholastic Bowl matches. If there were, the Panthers would still be talking about how it could not defeat George Mason.
