foxhunting
Virginia s state dog. the foxhound, could be affected by a set of bills working their way through the Virginia General Assembly. The legislature is working on bills to toughen penalties tor animal fighting, something aimed pnmanly at pieventing dog fighting. But it could inadvertently affect a centuries-old sport in Virginia — foxhunting. Masters of Foxhounds Association Executive Director Dennis Foster told the Richmond Times-Dispatch last week.
Twin bills in the House and Senate would create strict penalties for spectators and organizers of animal fighting. The bills were prompted by dog-fighting convictions won aganst quarterback Michael Vick.
In foxhunting, hounds 9 pursue a fox by scent; the tax usually slips its pursuers but is occasionally killed.
As written, the bills would allow law-enforcement officers to charge "spectators" at an animal fight with a felony.
