Skinker and a few friends began practicing in the slimmer of 1908. and the first match in Virginia was played at the local fair in September. Polo expanded over the next two years on three newly-cre- . ated fields in the area. The first was at Glenara (not John Kennedy’s Glen Ora, but the “older” Glenara near Marshall), followed by fields in Airlie and Sinclair's Corner.
Karber said that by 1911 the Fauquier Country Club had laid out a field near Marshall and soon had 18 polo playing members — nine from Warrenton, four from Marshall, two from The Plains, and one from Airlie.
