In 1913, Army Chief of Staff General Leonard Wood (Roosevelts friend and Rough Rider commander with whom he had charged up San Juan Hill), formally organized the Army Polo Association. They used cavalry horses as their mounts and competed regularly with civilian and collegiate teams.
From the Army polo tradition came Gen. George Patton, whose great -grandfather was Virginia governor. An Olympic medalist, Patton was an avid polo player and foxhunter. Also an Army player, Col. Billy West was ranked as Virginia’s best polo player in the 1960s.
Today there are 31 polo fields, nine polo arenas and hundreds of polo players within a 50-mile radius of Fauquier County
This week’s Rough Riders Cup at (heat Meadow honors the century-old tradition in the region, and the IIS. ft>k> Association arena championships, also at Great Meadow, underline the past, and present, importance of the sport in Fauquier.
