wide Secretariat course played host to 329 races in ‘08, easily a record. There were 285 turf races during the 2007 season and 287 in 2006.

“1 was especially pleased with the amount of turf racing. We have the best turf course in the country, and the horsemen recognize it.” Woolnough said.

Jump races — usually two — were conducted each Sunday.

Turf races averaged 8.2 starters per race this season. Colonial had 7.9 starters per race overall, down from last season’s 9.1.

Virginia-breds took full advantage of the new 100 percent purse bonus in open races, winning 70 races and finisliing in the money 388 times. Virginia-breds earned a total of $1,152,075 in bonuses this season.

Overall purses averaged $210,935 in 2008.
