#TCN: There have been a number of pari-mutuel tracks thut try out stevplechasing. but many seem to drop the sport after a race or two. Why is that? What is it about jump racing that doesn’t properly mesh with flat racing? It would seem to be a natural.
*LR: Unfortunately, racing at the tracks is no longer about the sport: it is about the dollars. It is a natural tit. but the tact of the matter is that handle on steeplechase races drops in comparison to races on the flat. Furthermore. many I flat-track I horsemen, who have a say in the matter, view it as giving money away to “other horsemen'* l steeplechasers | that normally don’t race at that venue, it is a very myopic 'approach to business, but it is reality.
