“I really hope that people will be struck by the feeling of being confronted by an actual replica of the jail celL People have commented on the demeaning aspect of it and the sense of actually being locked in there.' Kenny said.
Shining back at spectators through the imposing metal bars is a mirror, placed above the sank to force viewers to take a look at themselves. a segment of the message Kenny hopes to impart.
Tm offering a warning and a chance for people to see firsthand what can happen if they don't think more about drinking and driving. I want people to think of this as a representation of themselves that they might not be looking closely at. which I think we all have.* Kenny explains.
He also cautions that the installation is not to be seen as a critical representation of his experience. He simply seeks to delve mure deeply into the psychological, emotional. and spiritual aspects of being confined to a cell.
“There's a lot of self esteem issues that could be addressed while people are in there and sometimes are what caused them to be in there in the first place * Kenny said. “In some cases, being in jail makes it even worse*
Kennys exhibit “The Prison Within* will open on Saturday, Sept. 13 from 21 p.m. to 6 pun. at the Packing Shed Comer Fine Art Gallery’s Six Pack Front Gallery on the corner of Porter and Gay Streets in Washington. The exhibit will be on display until Sept.
