On Saturday at 3:30 p.m., the Governors Cup concludes. A question-ana- , answer session with USPA officials follows at 5 p.m., with the finals of the U.S. Arena Open slated at 7 p.m.
The 12-16-goal tournament is played as on “open,* Karber explained, or without a handicap favoring either side. ‘But what you get,* Burton explained, at that high-level tournament rating, “are players with 4, 5, 6 and higher handicaps. You get the nation's toprated players.*
Though the US PA Arena Championships are considered a nationwide tournament, officials offer East Coast and West Coast versions every other year.
“The problem with a national polo tournament,* Karber explained, “is that it is a logistical nightmare to ship dozens of horses across the country. It's not like a baseball team that can hop on a plane and get across the nation in a few hours. It's not like that with horses.*
Thusly, he ceded, this year's championships have a distinctly eastern flavor, but “these are still the best in the sport. They will all be exciting games."
