Hie Abbey is now featuring Denise’s famous cheese cake anrl other goodies, as well as desserts by other local bakers. You will never know in advance what is there, but the fruit and nut cake and the carrot cake looked excellent. Come for soup, sandwich, dessert and enjoy some wonderful jazz on Main Street at the Abbey

Kudzu invasion

We often talk about the kudzu and bittersweet invasion of our forests and yards. What if we had a “kudzu/bittersweet control coordinator’’ who worked on public lands and supported private landowners with suggestions for control and eradication of these invasive plants? My daughter-in - law is the Sparting Control Coordinator for Skagit County, Washington, and works in collaboration with the tribes and environmental organizations. She and her crew follow the tides from April to October to control this invasive grass that crowds out the habitat where shellfish reproduce and Dungeness crabs lay their eggs. Even the local tribes and reservations are using these services. I look to the master gardeners and forest experts to continue this conversation about kudzu and bittersweet, or end it, if appropriate.
