Other entnes included the Rappahannock County High School Band; a corps of majorettes; community floats; Miss Rappahannock and other contest winners on floats, in convertibles and on fire apparatus; the Rappahannock County Democrats with the state House of Delegate candidate John Lesinski; and the Desperate Horsewives on their mounts.

On parade night, the price of admission was only a lawn chair. Little ones squealed and big folks cheered as dozens of gleaming fire and rescue vehicles passed by. Family and friends tailgated, they had picnics, and they socialized in a true spirit of community.

After the parade, the carnival was in full swing with several children's rides, games of chance including bingo, and games of skill requiring a good throwing arm. good aim with a water gun, or accurate toss of coins at various pieces of glassware. Burgers, French fries, cotton candy, sumptuous baked desserts, and fried puffy pastries were available for the hungry crowd.

For those who stayed home because of threatening weather, the next parade and carnival will be in Amissville on Thursday,June 25 followed a month later by the Flint Hill parade and carnival on Friday Aug. 7. These carnivals are major fundraisers for the volunteer emergency fire and rescue sendees that residents depend on during personal and community emergencies.

Once a year, on a summer evening, the local entertainment creates the kind of cherished memories Hollywood can only dream of.
