Although RAWL may be a private foundation, it is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit corporation that operates on county property and receives county funding. RAWL receives about $60,000 annually from county taxpayers. As a consequence, the board is responsible and accountable to the public.
For instance, we would like to know just what financial controls RAWL has in place, is there county oversight, and who is, or was, responsible for the shelter renovation project? Was there a project manager appointed, was there a budget and money appropriated, and are there firm guidelines and bylaws that are being followed; all actions that a Board of Directors would be held accountable to.
Why the abrupt dismissal?
Ms.Cunningham, over the past 15 years, has significantly improved the finances of RAWL through donations. In a letter to the editor several prominent citizens laud her efforts and contributions.
We are left with the conclusion - without evidence to the contrary - that the board, at the very least, would rather everything be swept under the rug, that the lax oversight might continue, that they not be held accountable to the public that supports them - not only through tax dollars, but in donations and volunteerism as well.
Those are not the actions of a responsible non-profit foundation board that depends mightily on community support.
