mixture of Kentucky blue grass and some type of fescue. These grasses do best in the spring and fall and can look good even through much of the winter. They often go dormant in July or August when it is hot and dry. Now is the time to fertilize cool season grasses. Because nitrogen is mobile or transient in the soil, recommendations are made without taking a soil test. Extension recommends, based on research done through Virginia Tech and Virginia State University, up to 1 pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet of lawn in October and again in November. This means that a homeowner may benefit from applying up to, two pounds of total nitrogen per 1000 square feet. These applications should be about 30 days apart.
