or no phosphorus or potassium in the fertilizer mix. A turf type fertilizer is usually a slow release fertilizer as well. On a fertilizer bag there are three numbers, for example 25 — 3 — 7. These numbers mean that 25 percent of the bag by weight is nitrogen (N), three percent is potassium (P) and seven percent is phosphorus (K). N P and K are always listed in the same order. The remaining 65 percent of the bag is filler or inert material.
If a homeowner had a 15,000 square foot lawn, which is just over one-third of an acre of lawn, and if they wanted to buy the above fertilizer and apply it to their lawn, then they would need 60 total pounds of this turf type fertilizer in the example above to do one application for one pound of nitrogen for 1000 square feet of lawn.
