As it enters its 25th year, the NBCAM organization is comprised of several national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies and works year-round to raise awareness. And one could successfully argue that they’ve brought breast cancer awareness to the forefront.
This month, the National Football League has supported the initiative with players and coaches donning pink gloves, cleats, and hats in an effort to raise awareness.
Our own Rappahannock County High School Lady Panther volleyball team is holding a volleyball match On Oct. 22 to promote breast cancer awareness. Team members and attendees will be wearing pink.
October also brings innumerable breast cancer walks and. locally, several residents took part in those events, raising money along with awareness as they stepped forward in search of a cure.
That so many people are willing to donate their time, energy, and money to the cause is both remarkable and understandable. You'd be hard pressed to find many people who haven’t been touched in one way or another bv breast cancer.
It is the most common cancer among American women, except for skin cancers. According to the ACS, chances of developing invasive breast cancer at sometime in a woman’s life are about 12 percent.
The good news is that awrareness and advances in medicine are making a difference. After increasing for more than 20 years, female breast cancer incidence rates decreased by about 2 percent per year from 1999 to 2006.
It is, however, still the second leading cause of cancer death in women, behind lung cancer.
Fauquier Hospital is offering free screening mammograms to any woman who has turned or wall turn 40 in 2009, You’ll need a referral from vour doctor and must schedule the appointment before the end of the year.
If you celebrate the big 4-0 this year, take advantage of the offer. If you don’t and are due, find the money to have it done. Soak up the educational resources out there. Do self-exams, see your doctor, and have a mammogram.
