Those who spoke at a public hearing that preceded the board’s regular meeting Tuesday agreed the school system had improved under Chappell’s helm, but had different ideas on what the next superintendent should focus on.
“Your choice of the next superintendent is probably the most important single act this board will take,” said Bill Dietel, a longtime supporter of local schools and such nonprofits as Headwaters, which operates successful programs in Rappahannock schools as the Farm-to-Table agriculture and nutrition courses and NextStep college preparation service.
“The most important qualification of a superintendent is to provide academic leadership,” he said. Financial management, buildings and grounds, construction and renovation and budget issues - these are important, also, Dietel said. But they should be delegated to members of what he foresaw as a “first-rate team.”
“In a small, rural school district like ours, it is unrealistic to expect a single leader to try to achieve all of your goals,” he said.
