erant of drought and insects next growing season. It is important that turf be fertilized at the proper rate. Over fertilization can cause excess nutrients to end up in ground and surface waters, causing pollution.
Putting fertilizers down at the wrong time can also cause problems with pollution, and even be damaging to dormant or drought stressed plants. Fertilizer can be swept from sidewalks and drives to stop it from entering our waters. Over fertilization is also expensive.
Take a look at that lawn. Most of our local grasses are cool season. Now is the best time to fertilize Kentucky blue grass and fescue. Now may also be a good time to lime an acidic soil or compost a compacted soil. Fall is also a great time to get the lawn aerated.
