For anyone wondering why a red balloon was flying over Little Washington Friday, Oct. 2, it was a test to show the height of a proposed 150-foot public safety tower that Rappahannock County has made application to the Washington Town Council for consideration, according to Richie Burke, Rappahannock County Coordinator, Emergency Management & E-911.
The public safety tower is “seriously needed” so that the county’s emergency responders can effectively receive the alert page and voice when their fire and rescue departments are alerted for emergency calls in the county, said Burke.
The old tower is over 25 years old and is only 80 feet in height and only a 20 foot section could be safely added to it for a maximum height of 100 feet and that modification really wouldn’t improve the signal that much, he said.
