Groundbreaking

Thom Pellikaan, left, a Rappahannock County committee member of the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby, Frankie Gilmore, derby director, and Laura Grigsby, another Rappahannock member of the derby, break ground at ceremonies Sept. 24 for the Piedmont Area Soap Box Derby’s permanent tract on Sperryville Pike in Culpeper. The local derby is the world's largest and will be home to one of the largest permanent derby facilities in the nation hopefully for the June 2010 derby. Last year Rappahannock was represented by 11 drivers and eight sponsored cars in the derby.
