Silently, in earnest prayer, he finds haven for his storm-tossed spirit. In faith and child-like wonder he hears again the Easter story. His voice lifts up in praise and in thanksgiving. Deep serenity floods his being for he knows that here is a miracle greater than any he,, himself, can ever perform. The knowledge brings ^gratitude ... as gratitude brings hope . . . as hope brings abiding strength.
“What is man that Thou are mindful of him-” he asks with the psalmist. And his heart tells him the answer. For man is the child ' of God, whose weakness and need for his Father are his hope, his strength and his salvation.
He knows then that all the won- drous works of his own hands are as broken toys except as they help to bring his spirit closer to God. And again he rejoices. His false pride melts away ... his being is cleansed . . . he sits once more with simpler men in Chartres Cathedral, in the nave of mediaeval Canterbury, in the catacombs of Rome. He is one with the trusting shepherds, led out of Egyptian darkness, as they stand at the foot of Mount Sinai. ~~
The bells peal their triumph in the Easter sunshine, in peace and joy, man exults with the ancient chronicler: “Let the - heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice, and let men say among the nations, the Lord reigneth.”
