“Strike Back At Cancer—Man’s Cruelist Enemy,” is the keynote of the 1954 Cancer Crusade for funds and increased public awareness of the American Cancer Society’s threepoint program of research, education and service. With this slogan, the month-long campaign in Virginia has as its goal) "$302,500 to further medical research and public health progress in the early detection and treatment of cancer, one of the leading causes of, death in this state and throughout the nation.
The Virginia Cancer Crusade in April—Cancer Control Month—is part of the nation-wide drive of the American Cancer Society with which this state’s Division is affiliated. The national campaign chairman is Elmer H. Bobst, New York business leader. Public support is being sought for a three-way program of research, educatic and service essential to detecting and controlling cancer. Williams R. Perkins, Jr., of Lynchburg, is state campaign chairman* Discussing the drive, he said, “The decisive spirit to conquer cancer, expressed in our 1954 Cancer Crusade slogan, inspires all of our Volunteers. They are going ahead with this drive with the feeling that growing public awareness of the cancer problem will assure greater response than ever to their appeal. •
