According to recent reports 175 to 300 tons of soil per acre in being deposited on farms east to the Dust Bowl. This top soil is blowing from farms that can’t afford to lose it. In the Culpeper Soil Conservation District \ye have a somewhat different erosion problem than do the ranchers of the Southwest. Our problem affects more acres over a larger area and results from rainfall1 rather than the lack of it. Although the control for water erosion is quite similar to that used to control wind erosion. , Establishing soil and water conservation practices not only protects the resources but it is also just good business because they increase the cash earnings of the farm. A ten year study in Illinois showed that farms following good conservation practices eared an average of $6.36 per acre per year more than comparable farms using little or no conservation methods. . _•____

A average farm of 200 acres in ^Culpeperand ^Rappahannock Counties would have an additional income of $1252 per year when farmed under sound conservation methods. Twelve hundred and fifty-two dollars would pay a lot of farm debts however, that is only secondary. Saving valuable topsoil and -rainfall which is the ' foundation of any farming operation is of prime importance. Seven hundred and twenty Culpeper and Rappahannock County farmers are working with their locally organized Culpeper Soil Conservation District. All have developed complete farm plans for soil and water conservation assisted by Soil Conservation Service technicians* - < . ‘ ■*

Four Rappahannock County farmers who have recently developed complete farm plans includes: Woodrow Coughlin, Castleton; Dudley Martin, Amissville; George Gray, Sperryville, and John H. Pearman, Amissville.

Assistance in developing the farm plans amj establishing the applicable conservation practices was givgn by Soil Conservation Service technicians.
