The combined effects of the droughts and flood have been so de-__ trimental to the trout population that the streams are unable to support; angling in 1954 and still retain sufficient adult stock for spawning purposes next fall. The legal size trout observed and exajnined during recent studies were very thin and in poor condition.

It would be impractical at present to attempt nature in restoring trout populations by planing hatchery fish, as food supplies are so low now that planted fish would have difficulty sustaining themselves and would also be in direct competition with native trout for whatever little food is available. Previous studies in the Park have shown that under normal weather~ conditions the .natural reproduction of brook trout is adequate to maintain good angling. It was indeed unfortunate that the streams have recently been subjected to such serious consequences of drought and flood. Studies made this March .indicate that there should be sufficient native trout present to repopulate the streams arid perhaps provide- some fishing next year. .

It is considered inadvisable to stock legal size trout and leave the streams open to angling as planted Ibrook trout are mostly removed during the first 2 or 3 weeks of the season, and careful studies have indicated* those not caught usually die before or during their first winter in the' Stream. The remaining native trout would also be caught out through such a program creating a sittMHon Contrary to the best interests' of sportsmen interested in natural fishing conditions and the National , P.ark Service. , J It is not advisabe to close streams aand leave others open, to fishing, be concentrated on the open waters Extra heavy ‘fishing pressure would which could easily result in further serious reduction of the already small brood stocks, j Additional studies will be made
