The Division of Forestry reports that 188 forest fires burned 558 acres of forest land in the 16-county Northern Piedmont District to date for this year. In Rappahannock County, 2 fires have burned 1 1/4 acres of forest land. Compared to the spring of 1963 fire losses have been small this year. Last year, the first five months showed a total of 364 fires, and these fires burned 8,032 forested acres in the Northern Piedmont area. This year the fire danger was low on many days during the critical months of February, March and April. During these months, a good supply of moisture kept the forest fuel moist on many of the windy days. The Division of Forestryfire danger weather station, located in Charlottesville, recorded the following rainfall in the first four months of 1964; January 4.06 inches, February 4.46 inches, March 1.94 inches, and April 4.26 inches.
