ai wmcn you ao not iook. Some human errors are ln§yitable.

In the study mentioned, one area was ringing up produce sales, where the checkers also weighed and priced it. Check' ers often misread the produce scales.. Actually, here was a double chance for error. . one reading the produce scale and one ringing up sales. Another area of errors was ; in split purchases. Apparently where items were priced as multiple units. . 2 for 39d, 3 for 53d, 6for 87 d—checkers found it hard to come up with the right price if you bought just one can, bottle or unit. Again there was a double chance for error. . .one in mental arithmetic and one ring* ing up the amount. There’s another interesting aspect of these checker errors. Apparently more errors are in favor of customers than of the store. Why? Two possible answers come to mind. One is that the checker is interested in public relations and so just gives the customer the benefit of the doubt In cases iwhere price marketings are hard to read. Another is that checkers lack strong loyalty to their employers so again give customers the benefit of any doubtful figures. In either case, errors tend to favor the customers.

Errors on your cash register tape seldom would mean much money. . either favoring you or over-charging you. About i 1/2 percent of total sales are affected by errors. You might feel that the possible benefits would not pay for the time involved. You might feel that the errors tend to be in, your favor, so why worry. Yet, the amount and number of errors in a cash register tape may also be a help to you in evaluating a store. If the management is lax here and permits many errors, chances are it's lax elsewhere where it may affect you even more.
