Ground Water Conditions
in Rappahannock
The'northwest edge of the county is in the Blue Ridge province and Is underlain by igeneous and metamorphic rocks. The rest of the county is In the Piedmontpr ovince and is underlain mostly by granite and gneiss; small areas of sedimentary rocks occur east of Amissvllle, and from Woodviiie to Slate Mills. In the mountainous portion of I the county west of the fault 3 that passes approximately one I mile west of Sperryvllle and : Washington, nearly all water : supplies are for farm or do: mestic use and are obtained i from springs or dug wells. The • few drilled wells in this : portion are six inches in diame ter, less than 200 feet deep, and less than 20 gallons per minute in yield. The water is generally of good quality from springs and from wells deeper than 100 feet. In the portion of the county east of the fault most of the records available are for wells located in the Sperryville - Washington - Flint Hill area. Two wells in this area, each approximately 200 5 feet deep, have reported yields of 75 gallons per minute; one is located near Sperryvllle and the other near Flint Hill. The average yield is less than 15 gallons per minute although 20% of the wells have reported yields between 15 and 40 gal
