Taylor Hoskins, Superintendent of Shenandoah National Park, announced today that the summer schedule of conducted hikes and campfire programs in the Park will begin on Saturday, June 13, for the 1964 season. These activities will be led by a well qualified staff of nine seasonal ranger-naturalists from colleges and universities across the nation, and will be supervised by the Park’s permanent naturalist staff. The hikes vary in length from the 1-mile rock scramble over Bearfence Mountain to the 4.4 mile round trip to Whiteoak Canyon Falls. Anyone in norm, al physicial condition can keep pace since the trips progress at the rate of about 1 mile per hour.Comfortable clothing and walking shoes should be worn. The campfire programs cover a wide range of natural history topics and are liberally illustrated with colored slides. Group singing around the campfire adds to the evening’s entertainment. Two self-guiding nature trails are maintained for those who cannot attend the conducted trips.
