‘The big problem in dia-' betes control today is the detection of the disease in persons who have diabetes and are unaware of it," said Dr. W. R. Southward, Jr., Director, Division of Disease Control, Virginia State Department of Health. "Diabetes is primarily a disease of persons over forty and as our population ages, it will probably become more prevalent. Unless special efforts are made at detecting it early before the illness can cause complications, many unknown diabetics run the risk of developing such illnesses as hardening of the arteries, serious infeetions, and damage to various organs. The hidden two-fifths of our diabetic population can live full and satisfying lives by early detection and simple treatment. Diagnosis is very easy and inexpensive."
