Also needed is a way to diffuse the light. The best diffusion is given by a CLM diffusing bowl. This is milkcolored glass bowl shaped like an old fashioned spittoon. The design shields the bulb from top viewing. Inside this, the lamp should be equipped with a 50/150 watt or a 100/300 watt 3 way bulb.
In recent years bulb manufacturers have designed inside coated or soft-white indirect bulbs which are very effective. The R-40 or mushroom shaped bulb is designed to direct two-thirds of the light downward and one-third upward. A wide harp is necessary for this bulb. The newer and smaller sight saving bulbs are also very effective in diffusing light. A plastic diffusing disc is sometimes used for this purpose. Diffusion, whether from a diffusing bowl or from a sight-saving bulb, prevents harsh shadows and glare and gives a soft, pleasing sightsaving light.
