Deputy Ernest Lillard, who is also custodian of the local jail, has a German police dog which he plans to train for criminal work. On one occasion, I had been up to the jail on business and the dog playfully nipped at the back of my legs when I walked through the yard. I wondered then if it could be successfully trained. Well the dog has proven itself, and really turned out to be a “police dog* of high calibre, for it recently took a bite out of a visiting sergeant of the State Police Department, pants, undies and skin.
The extension of telephone service and elimination of toll charges between Sperryville, Culpeper and Madison is quite nice and a big step forward. However, I’m still rooting for additional elimination of tolls. With the toll eliminations, I am able to call from my home in Amissville to the sheriff in Sperryville, a distance of some 18 miles, when, as a Justice of the Peace, I have business to transact with him. As a newspaper Editor, I may call from my home, toll free, to the newspaper office in Madison, about 40 miles. But. . . I
