To Fit the Crime
A Virginia Judge has tailored the punishment to the crime sentencing a woman who tossed a pop bottle from a moving car to spend a day picking 14) roadside litter. The woman had chosen a particularly bad time to discard the bottle; a state trooper was driving directly behind her, and had all the evidence he needed. The sentence was handed down last week by Judge F. Nelson Light of Pittsylvania County Court, who previously had set similar penalties for men convicted on litter charges. M. E. Bayllss, the Highway Department's resident engineer at Chatham, said the woman’s husband accompanied her on her litter-collecting chores. “The woman didan ex- ! cellent Job,” said Bay lies. It costs the Department more than $500,000 a year to clear trash from the State’s roadsides.
