Virginia and in the mountains from Roanoke south. Lower squirrel populations are evident in \he central and north ern mountain sections. A mast shortage in the Virginia moun tains and portions of the pied mont is expected to put the squeeze on squirrel populations this winter. u There seem to be more rab bits nearly everywhere in Virginia, so beagle fanciers should have a banner year. Rockingham County seems to be experiencing a mild rabbit population explosion. Crouse hunters can look forward to hunting about on a par with last year in the central and northern portions of grouse range. From Roanoke south, some decline in grouse numbers has been noted. Bear populations seem to be about the same as last year, although several counties immediately north of Roanoke re ported increases. Madison County also has an increase in the number of bears over last year. The shortage of mast is expected to influence the distribution of bears and may have some effect on hunt ing success.
