Hunt Prospects
Extremely Good
The 1966-67 hunting season should be a good one according to game abundance reports received from Game Commission Field personnel. \lthough these reports are based only on personal observa tions of these men afield, they give a general picture of hunting prospects in the various sections of the state. Deer numbers are up in about one-third of Virginia counties including many in the central mountain, western piedmont, and eastern tidewater sections. Reports from northern Virginia, the eastern pied mont and southwestern moun tains indicate deer numbers about on a par with last year, significant decreases were noted in the Dismal Swamp and in Surry, King and Queen, King William and Essex Coun ties.
Substantial turkey Increases were noted in nearly all piedmont and central mountain counties as well as in those southwest Virginia counties open for fall hunting. In most northern counties turkey num bers were on a par with last year. Prospects should be extremely good in the central mountain section, which pro duced about half of the state kill last year. Good numbers of quail are evident in nearly all parts of the state pointing to an excellent quail season if weather cooperates, a few southwest Virginia counties on the western slope of the Blue Ridge reported de creases.
