Medical meeting in Washington, D. C. Mrs. L. J. Turner left Thursday and accompanied by Mrs. William S. Dewhlrst of Richmond spent the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James M. Pharr in Newport News, and attended the wedding Saturday of James M. Pharr, Jr. and Miss Sandra Marie Thomas at First Presbyterian Church in Newport News. Mrs. Turner entertained at a bride's luncheon on Friday at the Chamberlain Hotel at Old Point Comfort.

For Discharged Vets

Veterans Administration hos pitals have been ordered to open their doors to recently discharged veterans who think they may be suffering from malaria. The new admittance policy applies to former members of the armed forces who have been home for 100 days or less The Veterans Administration is advising its hospitals to be on the alert for any symptoms of this disease among newly discharged servicemen. More than 2,000 cases were reported in the army last year. The Army Surgeon General reports an increase of ^malaria among those returning from duty in Southeast Asia. At present, the Pentagon re ports there are more than 150 patients in military hospitals with malaria. A large number of the cases are a type of malaria known as falciparum, symptoms of which sometimes are so mild that the person may not know he actually has the disease. Often, the malaria does not present the usual chills and fever. It has been found that falciparum malaria is often resistant to the usual quinine treatment, and other methods of treatment now being used. Research on the treatment of this strain of malaria with various drugs is underway. Use of one new anti-malaria drug may cut in half the number of men stricken by the disease, the Army Surgeon General’s office announced (the drug is DDS, diaminodiphenysulfone). The drug also
