non-taxable ownership 1,169,723 acres during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1965. Of this amount, over 700,000 acres were taken in title by the Federal government. For the fiscal year 1 ended June 30, 1966, th« amount acquired'is estimated at more than 1,700,000 acres. Of this, Federal agencies were listed as acquiring over 788,000 acres, most of it for recreational purposes in the eastern part of the United States. The Virginia General Assembly this year authorized a tremendous expansion of the State's park system, with 36 new State parks to be established over a 10-year period. The Virginia Outdoor Recreation Commission has recommended that the State provide 45 acres of parks per thousand population. This would probably mean buying 180,000 acres from private owners, it was pointed out by Wilson B. Sayers, director of research for the fordst industries association.
