■ * i-j A change in the social security law this year provides, for a special cash benefit to be paid to men and women age 72 or older even though they have never worked under social security, according to Mrs. Hazel F. Daly, manager of the Winchester Social Sep curity District Office. Single men and women born before 1896 will receive 35.00 a month. An eligible couple will get 52.50 - the' husband’s share $35.00 and 17.50 for the wife. Benefits become payable be ginning October 1966 to persons 72 or over and checks #ill be delivered early in November. Eligibility for those persons who become 72 after October begin with the month of their 72nd birthday and checks will be received the first part of the following month. Only U. S. Citizens or aliens admitted to the U. S. for permanent residence and whohave lived in the U. S. continuously for five years can qualify. These benefits are reduced by the amount of any periodic pension that the eligible person receives from a governmental

pension system, jjfa benefit can be paid to any son during a month in which he receives a State welfare cash payment. These restrictions do not apply to payments under any Workman's Compensation plan or VA compensation benefits for service-connected disability or death.

McDaniel Reports on

T.B. Association

As his last official act as outgoing president, Joe McDaniel of Stanley reported on the major accomplishments of the TB & Health Association of Northern Virginia. His report is now being mailed to over 6,000 citizens in the area served by the Association including Clarke, Fauquier, Frederick (and Winchester), Loudoun, Page, Rappahannock Shenandoah and Warren Counties.

McDaniel said “Our Association was one of two in Virginia which studied its efficiency and inadequacies. We probed, we questioned, and we found we were doing a good job but that there is room for im’j provement." LO In turning the gavel over to Henry A. Lowry, McDaniel said that there is a challenge in the future. “One person in every 316 in our area is under Supervision of the Health Department for TB. Tuberculosis is -not licked! Respiratory Diseases are increasing! Pneumonia alone caused 11,— 000 deaths the first four months of 1966. “How can we help free the next generation from tuberculosis and find those who are spreading the disease? What
