Federal matching funds over 10 years. . ^Government owns about 10 per • &tent of Virginia’s land area, of which nearly 2,000,pOO acres, about 8.25 per cent are 'in government - owned f^cpr^ation areas; and already underway at the present time under a priority by law, are the following projects: Mount Rogers National Rec-^ reation Area, in Jefferson Naw tional Forest; Smith Mountain National Recreation Area; irn provements to Hungry Mother State pkrk; a natural tunnel project in Scott County: aBuggs Island project; a project of Breaks Interstate Park Authority; a project of the Virginia Regional- Park Authority; and a strip mining replacement project. , In the proposal stage are the « following projects: Acquisition by. the State of 50,000 acres in the Dismal Swamp; acquisition of 212,000 acres by the National Park Service to be added to Shenandoah National Park; a $5,000,000 project to acquire land for scenic and recreational purposes along the Potomac River acquisition of the remaining private land on Assateague Island for Assateague Island National Seashore.
