Beth O’Bannon Wins
As “Sweetheart”
Beth O’Bannon was named Sweetheart of Rappahannock County High School and received a crystal tiara during coronation ceremonies at the annual sweetheart dance held Saturday evening at the school. Beth is a senior and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Maurice O’Bannon of WoodviUe. She was escorted by Charles Dodson of Sperryville.
The Sweetheart was chosen by popular vote of the entire high school student body. She was attended by a court of four young ladies, on from each of the grades eight through eleven. The attendants were selected popular vote of the grade which she represented. They were: Amy Palmer, eleventh grade, escorted by Gary Wayland; Joan Kay Welch, grade ten with Eddie Wayland as escort; ninth grade was Mary Lynn Smelly escorted by Bill Settle; and Chery Taylor, eighth grade, with escort Stewart Hawkins. Stewart was also master of ceremonies.
The Sweetheart was crowned by retiring Sweetheart Beverly Payne. She was given a bouquet of red and white carnation^. Acting for the S.C.A. which sponsored the dance and party, Terry Russell presented a gift, a jewelry box, to each of the attendants.
Decorations for the dance were carried out in a Cinderella and glass slipper motif and music was provided by the “New Society’s Children” a band from Woodstock. Refreshments, fruit punch and valentine decorated cake was served, as well as mints and cinnamon hearts.
