The Rappahannock County Health Department would like lief remind all church groups, clubs; civic groups, or any person or persons who plan to operate a temporary restaurant such as yard parties, buffets, community suppers, auction sales, etc. to contact the local health department for a food permit prior to operation. The Virginia Restaurant Law requires that all food that is prepared and served to the public must be prepared in an approved kitchen. This kitchen must contain the necessary equipment to provide for the sanitary preparation of food and the sanitization of food utensils and equipment. The preparation of food in the private home cannot be approved for serving to the public. A church kitchen, school kitchen, or kitchens in community centers are usually equipped and approved for preparing food which will be consumed by the public. A kitchen in the home is designed for family use and is used mostly by the same individuals who usually share the same colds and are subjected to the same diseases.
