Judges Under Scrutiny
Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson has joined in sponsoring legislation to require federal judges, including justices of the Supreme Court, to obtain advance approval of outside earnings, including the practice of law. The bill also would require the judges to submit annual income statements, which would be kept on file with the Federal Judicial Conference and be available for public disclosure. Under the legislation, where outside work for pay would not interfere with judicial duties, such as lecturing for a fee, advance approval could be granted by the Judicial Council or other appropriate authorities. I “It is important thatthe public have confidence in the courts, and doubts arise when justices of the Supreme Court, or other federal judges, accept compensation for outside activities which might seem to involve a conflict of interest, even though, technically, they do not,” the 7th District Congressman commented.
