This is more than is reported for most sections of the United States, the average being 320 per 100 households. In the South Atlantic States it is 325. The Department of Commerce points out that, with mortality conditions as they are now, the number of children born need only be 2.13 per family to maintain the national population at its present level. Actually, in recent years, the number of children per family has been far greater than that, 3.18, which accounts for the overall growth in population, 13.3 percent in the last 10 years. President Nixon has taken note of the rising population pressures and their affect on the quality of daily life by appointing a “Commission on Population Growth and the American Future,” with John D. Rockefeller 3rd as chairman. It does not mean that government is going to tell parents that they can have only one or two children. Rather, it is explained, it will seek to anticipate and deal with growth and migration problems.
Carver’s Travel to New Mexico
Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Carver of the Fodder Stack ' Road, Washington have recently returned from a 12-day bus trip to New Mexico. Going the southern route via Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma to Albuquerque, N. M. they returned the northern route through Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
Mrs. Carver, saying she had been to New Mexico but she neither flew nor drove, expressed her pleasure and satisfaction with the bus trip and recommends it as a mode of travel.
