Take New Look
Linen closets are taking on a new look as homemakers take advantage of today’s varied offerings in sheets and other linens, reported an extension specialist in home economics.
“Durable press sheets are now on the market,” explained Katherine Habel, Virginia Tech assistant professor in clothing, textiles and related arts. “They cost slightly more than do regular sheets, but, since they need no ironing and stay neat while in use, they save time and money,” she said. Selecting sheets from today’s offerings could be fun, Miss Habel hinted. “Muslin and percale are two sheet fabrics most homemakers know from the past. But, today’s muslins and percales are different.
“Sheets are still available in regular muslin or percale allcotton fabrics. They are also available as durable-press, polyester cottons. Percales, with from 180 to 200 or more threads per square inch, are finer and smoother than the 128 to 140 threaded muslins. Shoppers can expect to pay a little more for the percales,” said the extension home economist. Miss Habel told of the colors and patterns available at linen display centers. “White sheets are still available," she said, “but often shoppers have to ask about them. The displays seem to emphasize durable-press, bold or soft colors, stripes and florals. Some sheets even carry the names of famous designers.
