There is a pasture branch, Kate Oettinger’s two plucky saddle horses, ridden by Kate and Molly Van Brederode, nearly repeated their last winer’s experience of getting stranded in Canterbury’s swimming pool, when they went belly-deep in that muddy stream. We proceeded past Jerry Jenkins home, Walter Masterson’s, and the Van Horn Place to climb the great sprawling sides of Juba Mountain. There the red bud was so thick and plentiful, it cast a fushia hue over an entire slope on the east side.
However aesthetically satisfying these trail riding experiences were, the last descent scattered all thoughts of colors and aromas right out of the minds of horses and riders. So threatenly steep is the soft, rolling-rock, rootcrossed path that you just close your eyes, your saddle’s grab your saddle’s cantel and hope the dear Lord will keep all four of your horses feet under the beast.
After this finale to the trail, you can imagine how secure and inviting appeared the horizontal sweep of the beckoning Shackelford House terrace, its waving occupants.

Th^, Rappahannock County Firemen’s Association diet Friday night at the Chester Gap Fire Hall for their regular monthly meeting. The members of the Chester Gap Baptist Church and the citizens of Chester Gap gave an appreciation dinner for the Rev. and Mrs. Roy Mathena on Sunday afternoon at the fire hall. The hall was decorated with forsythia and red azalea. The Mathena’s were presented a blender as a gift from the church. Mr. Mathena is in his third year as Pastor of the Chester Gap Baptist Church. The dinner was attended by 100 persons.
Mrs. Carolyn Leake and son Tony and Mrs. LaMerle Williams visited Mrs. Sonny Williams and family in Manassas Monday.
