A survey’ of 5 million older couples who collect social security retirement benefits showed that one-third of them receive payments of $160 a month or more, according to Mrs. Hazel F. Crumpton, social security district manager in Winchester.
Mrs. Crumpton cited a recent study of married couples with one or both members 65 or over who collect social security benefits.
The study also indicated that about 20 percent of the older couples collect social security benefits in the second^ygfrfft brackJr-$140 to $160 a month. About 15 percent of the couples collect benefits in the $U5-$140 bracket, about 14 percent in the $90-$ll5 bracket, and about 18 percent in the under-$90 bracket. “Half in the bottom bracket receive the minimum retirement benefit of $64, or reduced amount if they elected to collect benefits before 65,” she said.
