Undefeated this season, Chapel Street, from Paul Mellon’s Rokeby Stables, heads a banner field of 11 timer-toppers named for the 46th running of the Virginia Gold Cup. The four-mile test over 22 timber fences highlights a diversified six-race program to be held on the local Broadview Course Saturday, starting at 2 p.m.
A 6-year-old gelding trained by A. Ridgely White and ridden by Willie Moore, Chapel Street is a winner of two unsanctioned pointto-point races and the Deep Run Hunt Cup at Richmond and the Middleburg Hunt Cup at Mid$eburg this season. Although introduced to thoroughbred racing via the timber division, Paul Mellon of Upperville is better known today for his flat runners. Last year he fielded Fort Marcy, who gained honors as The Horse of the Year. Two former Virginia Gold Cup winners will be seeking a second triumph in the gruelling test of horse and rider. They are King of Spades, bred and owned by Dr. Joseph M. Rogers of Hamilton, and Annual Meeting, the property of John W. Warner of Upperville. King of Spades won last year in me colors of Thomas H. McKoy, Jr., owner of Highland Wedding, winner of England’s Grand National in 1969. Then trained by A. Ridgely White and ridden by Willie Moore, Annual Meeting scored for Mr. Warner in 1969.
