top to the freezer open and more food was missing. I tried to take fingerprints on the chrome handle of the freezer, but the prints had been messed up and it was excessively dirty. Inside the freezer, in the frost on the side wall, there was a lot of dirt, mud and some scratch marks. I thought at the time it might be a bear and those were paw prints in the frost, but I didn’t say anything because she (Helen Snead) was real upset and I thought she might think I was crazy or something.”

SO RONNIE Hawkins, who lives just down the road from the Sneads, kept a “stake-out” on the house for a couple of hours one night. “The bear came back; must of been after I’d gone, because I never saw anything. Helen called me the next morning and told me he woke them up during the night. Sam had to go scare him off the back porch.” Sam Snead is the son of Judge Rayner V. Snead. “I tell you, l sure am glad I didn’t arrest any suspects,” Hawkins said. “Can’t you imagine the lawsuit they would have slapped on us!”D
